How to Choose the Right CNC Router for Your Workshop

Investing in a CNC router is one of the biggest decisions a woodworking business will make. Get it right, and you unlock faster production, tighter tolerances, and jobs you simply couldn't take on before. Get it wrong, and you're left with a machine that bottlenecks your workflow — or worse, sits gathering dust in the corner.

At DAMACH Machinery, we've helped workshops across the UK specify, install, and maintain CNC routers for years. This guide walks you through the key decisions, in plain language, so you can buy with confidence.

1. Start With the Work, Not the Machine

Before you look at a single spec sheet, get clear on what you're actually going to make:

  • What materials? Solid timber, MDF, ply, acrylic, aluminium composite — different materials demand different spindle power and tooling.
  • What sheet sizes? Standard 8×4 sheets are the norm, but if you handle oversized panels, you'll need a larger bed.
  • What volumes? An occasional bespoke run has very different needs to all-day nesting and batch production.

Every decision below flows from these answers. A machine that's perfect for a bespoke furniture maker may be completely wrong for a high-volume kitchen manufacturer.

2. Bed Size and Working Area

The bed size determines the largest part you can machine in one pass. The most common format is 1300x2500 (roughly 8×4 sheet capacity), but options range from compact benches to large-format beds for oversized work.

> The golden rule: buy for the work you'll be doing in two to three years, not just today. Upgrading a whole machine later is far more expensive than specifying a slightly larger bed now.

3. Spindle Power and Speed

The spindle is the heart of the machine. Key considerations:

| Feature | Why it matters | |---|---| | Power (kW) | More power lets you cut harder materials faster and take deeper passes. Light routing needs less; heavy solid-timber or aluminium work needs more. | | HSK tool holders | A quality spindle with an HSK interface gives fast, repeatable, secure tool changes — essential for consistent results. | | Automatic tool change (ATC) | If you run jobs with multiple tools, an ATC spindle saves enormous amounts of manual time. |

4. The Controller — Don't Overlook It

The controller is what turns your CAD/CAM files into movement, and it has a huge impact on day-to-day usability. A modern controller (such as a TPA controller) should offer an intuitive interface, reliable file handling, and good diagnostics.

A powerful machine with a clunky controller will frustrate your operators every single day.

5. Dust Extraction Is Not Optional

Effective dust extraction protects your operators' health, keeps cuts clean, and prolongs the life of your machine. It's a legal and practical must-have — not an afterthought.

Extraction needs to be correctly sized to the machine and the volume of material you're removing:

  • Undersized → won't keep up
  • Oversized → wastes energy

If you're unsure, our team can help you match a system such as our SAF dust extractors to your setup.

6. New vs Used

  • Brand new gives you the latest technology, full warranty, and finance options.
  • Quality used can be an excellent way to get into CNC — or add capacity — for less outlay, provided it's been properly checked and serviced.

Weighing this up? Browse our current catalogue of machinery to see what's available, and don't hesitate to ask us about the history and condition of any listing.

7. Think About the Whole Cost of Ownership

The purchase price is only part of the picture. Factor in:

  • 🛠️ Tooling — a consumable, ongoing cost
  • Extraction and power — running costs
  • 🔧 Servicing and breakdown cover — the single biggest factor in long-term uptime

A CNC router only makes you money when it's running. That's why we offer nationwide breakdown cover and servicing — so an unexpected fault doesn't halt your production for days.

8. Buy From People Who'll Support You

The relationship doesn't end when the machine is delivered. Installation, operator training, and responsive after-sales support make the difference between a machine that transforms your business and one that causes headaches.
